No fewer than 14 persons have died following a boat accident in the Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Naija News reports that the tragic incident occurred at Gumbi village in Gumbi Ward when a boat conveying passengers capsized while returning from a wedding ceremony.
It was gathered that the victims had accompanied a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village, located in Ngaski Local Government Area.
The celebrants were said to be heading back to their community when the overloaded boat overturned, throwing more than 100 passengers into the water.
Fourteen persons, 13 women and one child, reportedly lost their lives in the mishap, while others were rescued.
The state governor, Nasir Idris, who attended the funeral prayer for the deceased, condoled with their families, the local government authorities, the emirate and residents of Yauri over the incident.
Represented by the Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the bereaved to accept the tragedy as the will of God.
“I appeal to you to accept this in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator.
“God does what He wants at the time He wants, and nobody has the right to question Him,” he said.
The governor also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and asked God to forgive their shortcomings and grant them Jannatul Firdaus.
All the victims were buried in accordance with Islamic rites shortly after the recovery of their bodies, as grief enveloped the affected communities.
