15 dead, rescue effort begins as boat capsizes in Sokoto

A boat capsized on Monday, May 8, 2023, in Shagari Dam Sokoto state and 15 people have already been confirmed dead as the search continues.

The occupants of the boat were crossing the Dam through Lambara village to Shagari when the Boat capsized.

Alhaji Muhammadu Jabbi, a resident of Illela Dabore a nearby village, said a number of people died since the establishment of the Dam in 2006 by the administration of President 0lusegun Obasanjo.

Jabbi affirmed that  the dam is becoming a curse to the communities rather than a blessing because of how so much lives have been lost due to boat mishaps, which is their only means of transport.

The dead bodies retrieved from the incident include 11 males and 4 females, who were yet to be buried at the time of this report.

Numerous calls for the state government to provide motorized boats and life jackets, have been made but nothing has been done.
