Over 70 schools yesterday began the battle for laurels at the second edition of the Lagos School Tennis Tournament.
The tournament, sponsored by the Allison and Oluremi Ayida Foundation, witnessed thrilling matches from 125 players during the preliminary stage held at the Lagos Tennis Club, Onikan.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the foundation’’s secretary, Taofeek Adejare congratulated the players for scaling through the screening process, noting that although 207 entries were received, only 125 players qualified to participate.

He emphasized that one of the foundation’’s key objectives is sports development as he reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth of tennis in schools.
“The Foundation stands on three pillars — spiritual growth, educational advancement, and the development of youth and sports,” he said.
Taofeek added that the tournament was also organized to honour the legacy of the late Allison Ayida, a passionate lover of tennis and one of the Foundation’’s trustees.
“Essentially, this tournament celebrates his legacy and seeks to nurture young talents by exposing them to competitive sports,,” he added.
Ubiebi Peter who defeated Igbinovia Gabriel 3–0 in the first round of the U-16 boys’ category expressed excitement over his first win since moving up from the U-14 category.
