The Federal Government has disclosed that about 80 per cent of the 2024 budget has been implemented, with emphasis on grassroots and infrastructure projects still ongoing.
Naija News reports that Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, confirmed this on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, where he appeared alongside the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, to review the pace of implementation of the 2024–2025 Appropriation Act.
During the meeting, the Committee Chairman, Abubakar Bichi (APC–Kano), said the session was convened because Nigerians were worried about the pace of budget execution and Parliament had a duty to ensure accountability.
“We engaged the Ministers of Finance and Budget; both acknowledged our concerns and assured us of their commitment. They promised that before the year ends, Nigerians will begin to see more visible results. We will continue to monitor closely,” Bichi told journalists after the meeting.
Speaking to reporters, Edun explained that the National Assembly’s decision to extend the lifespan of the 2024 budget to December had allowed ministries and agencies to keep executing projects.
“Implementation is at about 80 per cent. Since the National Assembly extended the 2024 budget till December, it is still running. We also reviewed the 2025 budget , with special focus on grassroots projects and infrastructure like roads and irrigation that directly impact citizens,” the Minister said.
He stressed that discussions were ongoing to ensure budgetary provisions were “faithfully and fully” implemented, adding that there was no plan yet for a supplementary budget.
On his part, Budget Minister, Bagudu said lawmakers acknowledged the Tinubu administration’s commitment to respecting the legislature and its reform agenda.
“The National Assembly has supported all major reform initiatives, including tax reforms which are already yielding results. Today’s engagement helped identify areas for improvement,” Bagudu said.
Both ministers highlighted that priority was being placed on projects with direct impact on citizens, including rural roads, irrigation schemes, and social infrastructure.
Edun noted that while the 2024 budget performance was encouraging, the ultimate goal was to ensure Nigerians could “see and feel the results” before year-end.
