‘It would drive me insane’ – Danny Murphy criticises ‘anxious’ Southampton boss Ruben Selles’ touchline antics

Danny Murphy says Ruben Selles’ touchline antics would drive him insane if he was a Southampton player.

Selles was appointed as Saints’ assistant boss in February tasked with guiding them away from the relegation zone, however, he looks set to fail in that endeavour as they find themselves eight points off safety with just three matches left.

Selles’ Southampton are in need of a miracle to stay in the Premier League

It’s not for a lack of effort though, with Selles seen putting in his heart and soul on the touchline during Southampton‘s huge clash at Nottingham Forest on Monday night.

But despite Selles’ passion, Murphy believes his constant gesticulating may be doing more harm than good.

“The manager needs to calm down,” Murphy said on commentary for talkSPORT. “He makes me anxious, never mind his players.

“I’ve seen some managers who are up and down on the touchline but he’s kicking every ball, he’s trying to tell every player where to be with every action they take.

“It would drive me insane being close to him on that pitch.”

“I was very lucky. I played under Dario Gradi, Gerard Houllier, Roy Hodgson, very calm managers,” Murphy added.

“I think it always benefits the team. The high emotion can be transferred to the pitch.

“You’ve got to be yourself of course but it’s a bit too much. It’s every pass. I know there’s a lot on the game but if you’re near your manager or coach and he’s continually on you…”

Selles’ words and gestures didn’t have the desired effect in the first half at the City Ground as Southampton found themselves 3-1 down at half time. The away side improved after the break but fell to a 4-3 defeat, meaning they could be relegated by Saturday, where they face Fulham.

And Murphy suggested the 39-year-old Spaniard should look to calm down for the benefit of his players.

Southampton conceded three times in the first half against their fellow strugglers

“Pep Guardiola can be very animated, Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta can be but this is quite out there,” Murphy said.

“There’s a lot going on, he looks nervous, anxious, all those things.

“I think if you’re a player in a relegation dogfight and you’re seeing him, I think that adds to your woes, it doesn’t help you.

“He’s got a lot of staff swapping places in that dugout, there’s lots of different messages coming on. It’s confusing, particularly for those players close to the noise.

“What most of the top managers do, they’ll work really hard in the week on a plan, build a philosophy and patterns of play that they know they’re going to see each game without having to play every ball for you.

“And I think in a game like this where there is a lot on it he’s not bringing any calmness to it. It’s frantic, it’s frenetic.”
