Ascot May racing weekend tips: 11/2, 10/1 and 14/1 tips for feature races

Ascot hosts a two-day meeting, the Peroni Italia Nastro Azzuro May Racing Weekend on Friday and Saturday this week.

There are some great fields in many of the handicaps across the week including the Class 3 1m4f handicap, Class 2 Fillies’ Handicap (1m) and Victoria Cup on the Saturday.

On Friday afternoon, there’s more potential for each-way winners but the runners are much more condensed and more geared towards straight winners rather than each-way bets.

Here we take you through the card and offer up our horse racing betting advice.

Ascot racing tips
1.50: Scholarship 3/1 – Friday
Tom Marquand takes the mount on Clive Cox’s Scholarship who was gelded before his seasonal debut.

And after a long break from August to April won by a neck over Hectic and is set up to take another step forward on just his fifth run.

Notably came 13th in the Coventry Stakes here but that doesn’t suggest he’s not suited to the Ascot track, but more so was up against it in Group 2 company and takes on a seemingly preferred 7f trip.

3.00: Majestic Beauty 3/1 – Friday
Alice Haynes has a better record in two-year-old turf races with a 19% strike-rate from 106 runners since January 2019.

She’s got a good run of form recently too to suggest there’s more to come.

Add to that Kevin Stott taking the mount and this should be another winning combination for the Amo Racing-owned newcomer.

This is a particularly promising filly who’s by Havana Grey and will likely be shortened in the market as she stands out in the paddock.

Stott has a 27% strike-rate over the last two weeks with eight wins from just 30 rides.

1.30: High Fibre 11/2 – Saturday
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro Class 3 Handicap is contested over 1m4f for horses up to the rating of 95.

This race is for horses four years and older and opens the door for big prize money for those improving since their last run – especially promising three-year-olds.

Nathanael Greene is one of those that could improve, is a lightly raced gelding trained by William Haggas, sired by Nathaniel.

He goes well fresh and can hopefully leave behind his bad run at Doncaster in November on heavy ground.

But High Fibre, now trained by Harry Fry looks a danger having been gelded in August and can also go well fresh – and only raced once in 2022 and could be well-weighted.

Saffie Osborne takes the reins on this horse for a trainer who primarily has jumps horses but has seen winners on the flat with Metier – who has finished ahead of Nathanael Greene.

High Fibre finished ahead of Israr who has since gone on to win and place over 1m4f and has potential over this new distance.

2.05: One Morning 10/1 – Saturday
Osborne also takes the ride on One Morning who is also very lightly races, by Gleneagles this filly has potential on just her second run over 1m.

Rated just 82, owned by Lady Bamford, her pedigree suggests she can take a big step forward over this new distance and at four-years-old is ought to progress on from her previous three runs.

2.40: Biggles 14/1 & River Nymph 16/1 – Saturday

There’s 23 runners in contention for a £51,540 prize for winning the Victoria Cup over 7f.

At the front of the market is Baradar at 7/1 for the in-form owners Amo Racing.

Concerns arise for this horse who finished far back at Royal Ascot in 2022’s Buckingham Palace Stakes.

Though this horse has returned to winning ways when switched to George Boughey’s yard.

Winning at Doncaster by over a length to Biggles and then on season debut third of 22 at Doncaster – and clearly thrives on soft and heavy ground which might be a winning combination if it’s still soft by Saturday.

Biggles came second behind the favourite Baradar two starts ago but was carrying 6lb more now there’s just a 3lb difference which he can take advantage of at a much bigger price too for trainer Ralph Beckett.

But crucially won’t mind good, soft or heavy ground especially given his 4¾l victory at Newbury while carrying top-weight.

He comes here in good form which is ideal and so does River Nymph at a similar price.

He’s placed close behind Fresh at Ascot before and has appeared at this track eight times from his 15 flat turf races.

This six-year-old can take a step forward on his season debut having finished close behind in big field handicaps, by only small margins.

He also won the Victoria Cup in 2021.
