A small step, or a Giant leap?

The Giants made a few intriguing moves this offseason, but it’s unclear just how big they’ll work out to be. Acquiring Darren Waller could provide a boost to the offense, if he’s healthy. Jalin Hyatt was a worthwhile pick to help bolster the wide receiver room. The are running it back with running back Saquon Barkley. But who are the Giants, really?

The question has to be asked because of who’s under center. Daniel Jones is coming off a season in which he threw 15 touchdowns with a depleted skill position group and parlayed that success into a big-money contract. Even with the promise, the Giants made it to the playoffs, downed the paper-tiger Vikings and then were outclassed by the Eagles in the divisional round. Jones threw for 135 yards and an interception in the 38-7 loss.

If Jones doesn’t continue his ascent, Big Blue may have more big questions than answers in 2023. Navigating one of the league’s toughest schedules will provide a lot of clarity to help.

Giants strength of schedule

If the Giants want to keep building on their surprising 2022 season, they’ll have to do it against the third-toughest schedule in football. The Giants’ opponents had a winning percentage of .549 in 2022, with a total record of 157-129-2. The Patriots and Cowboys also are tied with the third-toughest SOS.

Toughest tests: The NFC East will be as tough as it has been in recent years. A desperate Cowboys team with an established defense, the defending NFC champion Eagles and the traditionally pesky Commanders could provide a little bit more of a challenge, especially given the talent disparity between the Giants and the rest of the teams in the division.

The Giants also have a very odd schedule break: Seven of their first 10 games are on the road, which you can look at as a difficult break, or a good one, knowing that the majority of their home games come when the team should be rounding into form.

Biggest breaks: The Giants do play the NFC West this year, but they won’t have to worry about traveling to Seattle, where they lost in 2022. This time, Seattle travels to MetLife Stadium to take on the Giants. Traditionally, the NFC West has been one of the NFL’s tougher divisions in recent years, but this iteration may not be as fierce as it has been; the Rams are on the downturn, the Cardinals may be without Kyler M
