Osun Amotekun Corps has reported the tragic death of one of its operatives, Peter Tope, who was allegedly attacked by a soldier on Saturday in Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State.

In a statement released to journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, Corps Commander Mr. Isaac Omoyele disclosed that the violent incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. in the Ijeda area, leading to Tope’s death in the early hours of Sunday.

Omoyele stated that the attacker, a recently enlisted Nigerian Army soldier dressed in camouflage, approached the Amotekun station in Ijebu-Jesa with hostile intentions and made derogatory remarks about the Corps.

The soldier, along with accomplices, then allegedly ambushed Tope as he arrived on his motorcycle.

“They halted Tope, knocked him off his bike, and struck him on the head with a heavy object,” Omoyele explained.

“The assault continued for about 20 minutes, leaving Tope severely wounded and bleeding heavily.”

The assailants fled the scene on commercial motorcycles.

Amotekun operatives later rushed Tope to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa and reported the incident to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa.

Despite medical efforts, Officer Peter Samuel Tope succumbed to his injuries early Sunday.

Omoyele vowed to pursue justice, demanding a comprehensive investigation to hold those responsible accountable.

Osun Police Spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the incident to newsmen, noting that the police are working to apprehend the primary suspect, an Army Private.

“The suspect allegedly used a jack-knife to attack two Amotekun officers, injuring both. One has tragically died, and the other is under treatment,” Ojelabi stated.
