Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress have won a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, defeating Mali 78–64 in the final at Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on Sunday night.
With the victory, D’Tigress becomes the first African team to win the tournament five times in a row.
The win also marks their seventh overall AfroBasket title.
Since 2015, Nigeria have now won 29 consecutive AfroBasket matches.
The D’Tigress overcame a shaky start to defeat Mali 78–64 in a thrilling encounter.
The game began with Nigeria setting the pace early, but Mali quickly gained momentum to take the first quarter 26–21. D’Tigress regrouped in the second quarter and mounted a strong response, outscoring their opponents 20–15 to level the game at 41–41 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the defending champions stepped up their intensity and pulled ahead with another 20–15 run, taking a five-point lead into the final stretch. Nigeria then dominated the fourth quarter 17–8, sealing a convincing 78–64 win after a closely contested battle.
