The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has firmly refuted social media reports claiming the appointment of a new substantive vice-chancellor, clarifying that the selection process remains ongoing.
In a statement issued on Friday night by the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, the management dismissed the rumors as “misleading” and the work of “mischief-makers” intent on inciting confusion.
“The attention of the University of Nigeria has been drawn to a misleading report currently circulating on social media, claiming that a particular individual has been appointed as the substantive Vice-Chancellor,” Egwu stated.
“We wish to state categorically that no such appointment has been made. The selection process is still ongoing, and no candidate has been announced or confirmed.”
Speculation had intensified on Friday, with unverified reports suggesting that a former Enugu State Government official, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, was appointed, allegedly backed by Governor Peter Mbah to ensure an Nsukka indigene leads UNN for the first time since its founding in the 1950s.
However, Egwu urged the public to disregard these claims, emphasizing the university’s commitment to a transparent and merit-based selection process under the leadership of Pro-Chancellor Engr. Kayode Ojo.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions in Nsukka, where local stakeholders have been advocating for an indigene as vice-chancellor.
The process has been fraught with challenges, including political alignments and competing interests, following the end of Prof. Charles Igwe’s tenure in June 2024. Since then, UNN has been led by acting vice-chancellors, with Prof. Oguejiofo T. Ujam currently in the role until August 2025.
Adding a spiritual dimension, Methodist Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. John Eze led a prophetic prayer walk at UNN’s main gate on Friday, calling for divine intervention and a leader of integrity to restore the university’s excellence.
“UNN deserves a Nehemiah to rebuild its broken walls,” Eze said, reflecting community hopes for a transformative vice-chancellor.
