1. President Tinubu Orders Urgent Implementation Of Pension Increase
President Bola Tinubu has ordered the prompt implementation of a pension increase and a minimum pension guarantee.
He explained that the implementation would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The President also directed the expedited rollout of the free healthcare access initiative for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing it as a critical component of social protection and dignity in retirement.
According to a statement on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President gave the directives after receiving a briefing from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran.
Naija News reports that President Tinubu further mandated the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the longstanding police pension issue, emphasising that members of the police force who serve and protect the nation deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.
The DG also briefed the President on ongoing efforts to ensure the value preservation of pension fund assets, especially in the face of inflation and macroeconomic pressures, as well as plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
President Tinubu strongly supported the reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and protection for ordinary Nigerians.
During the briefing, the DG updated the President on a suite of transformative pension initiatives to enhance retiree welfare and expand the Pension Scheme’s reach.
2. EFCC Speaks On Olukoyede Abducting NNPCL Boss, Ojulari, Demands Public Apology
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has categorically denied reports that its chairman, Ola Olukoyede, abducted the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NNPCL) and forced him to sign a resignation letter.
The EFCC, in a statement on Wednesday, said the report from People’s Gazette on the purported incident is totally false and also demanded a retraction of the story and a public apology within 48 hours.
The anti-graft agency stated that the platform published a sensational and poorly sourced story, claiming that Olukoyede and the Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS), Adeola Ajayi, pressured Ojulari to sign a resignation letter.
The EFCC noted that its Chairman, through his lawyer, in a letter addressed to the Editor of Peoples Gazette, described the reports as uncharitable and capable of tarnishing his image.
The agency added that failure to retract and apologize for the story will attract further legal procedures.
3. Nigeria Is On The Verge Of Liquidation Under Tinubu’s Leadership – Secondus
A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has accused President Bola Tinubu of leading Nigeria in the wrong direction.
Secondus added that President Tinubu is steering Nigeria’s economy towards liquidation.
Naija News reports the PDP chieftain made the submission on Wednesday while speaking in Abuja at the public presentation of two new books authored by veteran journalist and political communicator, Ike Abonyi, titled The Bubbles of Nigeria’s Democracy: The Musings of a Nigerian Journalist and Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist.
He lamented that Nigeria’s current democratic structure is dysfunctional, with political parties lacking ideological coherence and institutional continuity.
Comparing Nigeria with South Africa, Secondus stressed the need for Nigeria to build strong political institutions, describing South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC), as an unshakable institution.
He contrasted it with the situation in Nigeria where politicians frequently switch party allegiance without consequence, saying such actions erode democratic culture and stability.
4. FG Needs ₦3 Trillion To Complete NNPCL-Funded Road Projects – Umahi
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has revealed that the Federal Government requires a staggering ₦3 trillion to complete ongoing road projects initially funded under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) tax credit scheme.
Umahi made the disclosure on Wednesday during a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, stating that NNPCL discontinued funding effective August 1, 2025.
He, however, added that President Bola Tinubu has directed the ministry to explore alternative financing models to ensure that no critical infrastructure project is abandoned.
Umahi disclosed that the ministry has compiled a list of all affected road projects and will soon submit it to the Presidency.
The projects, he said, may be repackaged under Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), where contractors demonstrate both financial strength and technical capacity.
The Minister also issued a stern warning to contractors who are stalling mobilisation to project sites, warning that the government would not entertain delays or manipulative tactics aimed at triggering project termination clauses.
5. ‘PDP Considering Giving Goodluck Jonathan Automatic Presidential Ticket’ – Chieftain
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may offer former President, Goodluck Jonathan, an automatic presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections if he agrees to return fully to partisan politics and assume a more active role in the party.
Naija News reports that this indication was given by the PDP’s National Financial Secretary, Daniel Woyengikuro, during an interview in Abuja, where he described Jonathan as the “national leader” of the party and a figure still widely respected across political divides.
Woyengikuro did not mince words about the former president’s stature within the party and the country at large, insisting that Jonathan remains the party’s most formidable option.
Woyengikuro further disclosed that high-level consultations are ongoing between the PDP leadership and Jonathan’s allies to woo him back into active leadership as the party works to reposition itself ahead of 2027.
When pressed on whether the party would consider granting Jonathan an automatic ticket if he rejoined the presidential race, Woyengikuro responded affirmatively.
6. WAEC Shuts Down Result Checking Portal Two Days After Releasing 2025 WASSCE Results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the temporary shutdown of its result checking portal.
The development was revealed in a statement on Wednesday by the Head of Public Affairs unit of WAEC Nigeria, Mrs Moyosola Adesina.
She explained that the result checker portal was shut down due to technical ìssues, promising that the issue will be resolved within the next 24 hours.
Adesina also apologized for the inconvenience the shutdown might cause.
Naija News reports that WAEC had on Monday, released the results of the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), taken by over 1.9 million secondary school students across 23,000 schools in Nigeria.
7. ‘So Many Suitors In My DM Can’t Even Spell’- DJ Cuppy
Billionaire heiress, Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has stirred reactions on social media after mocking the men who constantly message her asking for a relationship.
Naija News reports that on her official 𝕏 account, the disc jockey shared that her direct messages are filled with men expressing interest in her, but she finds it amusing that many of them struggle with spelling, especially the name of her dog’s breed, Pomeranian.
She wrote: “Making it big… but mother of Dúdú and FünFün, no husband, with plenty suitors in my DMs and none can even spell Pomeranian 😭🐾.”
Her post follows several others where she openly wished for a life partner, saying she has prayed for love and companionship.
8. ‘Avoid Korope Buses With Conductors’ – Small Doctor Warns Nigerians
Nigerian singer Adekunle Temitope popularly known as Small Doctor has raised alarm over the safety of boarding certain public transport vehicles, particularly minibuses known locally as “Korope.”
Naija News reports that the warning, shared on his Twitter page, urged the public to avoid minibuses that operate with conductors.
According to the singer, a large number of these vehicles may be involved in suspicious or dangerous activities.
He claimed that about 90 percent of such minibuses have hidden intentions and advised commuters to stay alert and avoid taking unnecessary risks when using public transport.
He wrote: “If You Come Across A Mini Bus (Korope) With A Conductor Please Do Not Board. Do Not Board. Do Not Board. 90% Of Them Has Another Agenda. Be Vigilant.”
9. Six Barcelona Players, Including Rashford, Are Yet To Be Registered For 2025/26 LaLiga Season
Six Barcelona players, including England international, Marcus Rashford, are yet to be registered for the upcoming LaLiga season due to the club’s ongoing financial issues, according to a report by SPORT.
Rashford joined Barcelona this summer from Manchester United on a season-long loan, with an option to buy for €30 million at the end of the campaign. However, like five other players, his registration is currently pending approval from the league.
This is not the first time Barcelona have faced such problems. Last season, players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor were given temporary licences that LaLiga later revoked during the January transfer window.
Despite the setback, Barcelona president Joan Laporta remains confident all six players will be registered before the season begins.
“It’s progressing well,” Laporta told ESPN. “We’re doing our job and we’re confident that we’ll be able to register everyone.”
10. Mikel Arteta Confident Arsenal Can End Trophy Drought This Season
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has expressed confidence that the club can finally win silverware this season following a series of near misses in recent years.
Mikel Arteta, who last lifted a trophy in his first season with the Gunners when they won the FA Cup in 2019/2020, believes his current squad is ready to take the final step after consistent progress.
“We know what our targets are and what we want to achieve this season, there is a big belief in our ability to achieve that,” Arteta said ahead of Wednesday’s pre-season friendly against Villarreal.
“We have been very, very close the last few seasons and the whole team is going to determine whether we achieve that or not.”
Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for the past three seasons and reached the Champions League semi-finals last term for the first time since 2009.
In a bid to go one step further, the club has spent nearly £200 million on six new signings during the summer transfer window.
