Emir Sanusi slams Nigeria’s culture of rewarding thieves with ministerial appointments

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has condemned Nigeria’s declining moral fabric, criticizing the practice of appointing individuals with tainted records to high public offices.

Speaking on Channels Television’s _Politics Today_ on Wednesday, the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor expressed dismay at a society that glorifies ill-gotten wealth and overlooks corruption.

“Our value system has completely eroded,” Sanusi declared, pointing to a troubling trend where individuals known for plundering public funds are rewarded with prestigious roles.

“When a society celebrates material wealth, no matter how it’s acquired, and appoints known thieves to ministerial positions, it perpetuates a cycle of decay,” he said.

Sanusi argued that many public officials lack the upbringing and ethical grounding needed for leadership.

“You don’t enter public office to amass wealth,” he emphasized, lamenting that many leaders prioritize personal gain over public good.

“We’ve been led by people with no values, no legacy to uphold, and no desire to leave one. They measure success by houses, private jets, and bank accounts, not caring that they’re seen as thieves.” He said.

Reflecting on the legacy of the late military head of state Murtala Muhammed, Sanusi called for a nationwide renewal of values like integrity and compassion.

“It’s not just about the president, governors, or ministers. Changing Nigeria requires a collective effort to restore our moral compass,” he urged.

The emir also criticized the destruction of the civil service, which he said has been weakened by political interference. “We need a civil service empowered to say ‘no’ to politicians who demand rule-breaking,” Sanusi asserted, stressing the need to rebuild institutions to foster accountability.

Sanusi’s remarks underscore the urgent need for Nigeria to prioritize ethical leadership and reject the normalization of corruption in public life.
