EFCC probes real estate sector over alleged diversion of stolen funds

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the ownership and funding of housing estates across Nigeria, identifying real estate as a major channel for laundering stolen public funds.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, stated on Wednesday that many of these estates are being financed by civil servants involved in corrupt practices. He noted that a special team has been set up to trace property ownership nationwide.

Olukoyede added that some estates have remained unoccupied for over a decade, raising further suspicion about their funding sources and true ownership.

Retirees rejects President’s order for free healthcare, demands withdrawal from CPS

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate implementation of free healthcare for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and directed long-overdue pension increases to be effected without delay.

He also tasked the Director General of the National Pension Commission, Omolola Oloworaran, to swiftly resolve the persistent police pension issue, emphasizing the need for officers who served the nation to retire with dignity.

While retirees welcomed the presidential intervention, they insisted that the only true solution was their complete withdrawal from the CPS. “If we remain under CPS, we will still remain caged,” said spokesperson Buba Danjuma.

Ghana mourns as ministers die in military helicopter crash

Ghana has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Ministers of Defence and Environment in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti region. The Z-9 helicopter, operated by the Ghana Armed Forces, was en route from Accra to Obuasi when it lost contact and crashed, killing all eight people on board.

The victims included Edward Omane Boamah (Minister for Defence), Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (Minister for Environment), Muniru Mohammed (Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator), and other prominent political and military figures. They were reportedly headed for an official engagement in the gold-mining town of Obuasi.

President John Mahama described the crash as a national tragedy, suspended government activities, and ordered flags to fly at half-mast in honour of the deceased.

U.S. yet to reverse visa restrictions on Nigerians, foreign ministry confirms

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the United States has not lifted its recent visa restrictions on select Nigerian citizens, despite Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts. According to ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, discussions are ongoing, but no progress has been made.

This means the restrictions may remain in force, as the U.S. has not officially responded to Nigeria’s request for a review. The visa policy, introduced earlier this year, significantly reduces visa validity and access for Nigerians.

Under the new rules, the U.S. has limited certain non-immigrant visa categories, such as B1/B2 (business/tourism), F (students), and J (exchange visitors), to three months, with only single-entry approval.

70% of Lagos smog caused by vehicle emissions – LASEPA

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has disclosed that about 70% of the choking smog in the city comes from vehicle emissions. The agency’s General Manager, Tunde Ajayi, shared the update via his verified X account on Wednesday, stressing that the agency is taking aggressive steps to tackle the issue.

Ajayi noted that LASEPA inspected over 12,000 vehicles in 2025 as part of its crackdown on harmful emissions. He emphasized that every compliant vehicle contributes to cleaner air across the state.

The agency continues to enforce strict annual emissions checks on vehicles to reduce air pollution from transportation and improve public health and environmental safety.
