FG sanctions 224 correctional officers in cracks down on misconduct

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has concluded a disciplinary review involving 224 personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), resulting in various sanctions aimed at reinforcing discipline, professionalism, and accountability within the Service.

This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday by Umar Abubakar, Public Relations Officer of NCoS, who noted that the decisions followed recommendations from the Board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee after extensive investigations and due process.

According to the statement, the review led to the dismissal of 15 officers for serious misconduct and violations of official regulations.

Another 59 personnel were demoted for falling short of professional standards, while 42 others were issued formal warnings as corrective measures.

The statement further noted that eight officers were compulsorily retired from the Service, and one officer had their rank reversed with an order to refund all salaries and benefits received while occupying the rank in error

Seven staff members were suspended pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations”, it said.

An officer has been recommended for prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following their suspension.

Meanwhile, 16 officers were fully exonerated after being found not guilty of the allegations brought against them.

The disciplinary actions, which span various categories of infractions, are part of an effort by the Board to instill discipline and uphold integrity across Nigeria’s correctional system.

NCoS noted that the Board, chaired by Olubunmi Tunde-Ojo, Minister of Interior, remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring ethical conduct and efficient service delivery within all paramilitary agencies under its purview.

Sylvester Nwakuche, Controller General of Corrections, however, assured Nigerians that all disciplinary matters within the NCoS were being handled with fairness and strict adherence to due process.

He emphasised that accountability and professionalism remain core values of the Service and called for continued public support in strengthening the operations of the correctional system.
