Okonjo-Iweala declares Tinubu”s economic reforms moving Nigeria.towards stability

She noted that reforms initiated by Tinubu’s administration are moving in the right direction.

Speaking to State House correspondents after a courtesy visit to the President on Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala said her discussions with the President focused on the launch of a landmark initiative aimed at empowering Nigerian women in the digital export economy.

She added that the Women Exporters Fund for the Digital Economy, jointly managed by the WTO and the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Geneva, was unveiled earlier in the day with the support of Nigeria’s First Lady.

The initiative, she said, was designed to help women entrepreneurs weather economic challenges, create jobs, and expand their businesses.

“Nigeria competed and emerged as one of only four countries selected globally for this new initiative,” Okonjo-Iweala said.

“Out of 67,000 Nigerian women who applied, 146 were successful. Sixteen of them, already running established businesses, will benefit from our booster track, which includes 18 months of technical and business support.

“Another 100 will each receive $5,000 alongside 12 months of business mentorship to help them start or scale their enterprises.”

She commended the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council for their role in championing the project in Nigeria, adding that the programme’s goal is to put more money into households and boost the nation’s economy through women-led businesses.

On the state of the economy, the WTO chief praised the Tinubu administration for taking decisive measures to restore stability.

“We think the President and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy. You cannot improve an economy unless it is stable. The reforms are in the right direction,” she noted.

Okonjo-Iweala, however, stressed the need to complement stability with robust growth and social protection measures.

“What is needed next is growth,” the WTO chief stated.
