The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has praised President Bola Tinubu and his administration for their efforts in stabilizing Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking during a solidarity visit to the President in Abuja on Thursday, at the state house, Okonjo-Iweala commended the government’s bold economic reforms, which she described as critical steps toward sustainable growth.
The visit, which shows the importance of collaborative efforts to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, saw Okonjo-Iweala advocate for the establishment of robust social safety nets to cushion the effects of reforms on vulnerable citizens.
“While the reforms are necessary, we must ensure that no one is left behind. Social safety nets are essential to support Nigerians during this transition,” she emphasized.
President Tinubu, in response, expressed gratitude for Okonjo-Iweala’s support and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing policies that foster economic resilience and inclusive growth.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen social intervention programs to mitigate the impact of economic adjustments on low-income households.
The meeting also focused on Nigeria’s role in global trade and the need to enhance the country’s competitiveness in international markets.
Okonjo-Iweala pledged the WTO’s support in helping Nigeria leverage trade opportunities to drive economic development.
The solidarity visit has been widely seen as a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s economic agenda, with stakeholders calling for sustained efforts to ensure the reforms yield long-term benefits for all Nigerians.
