Anfield is set for a deeply emotional night as Liverpool prepare to honour the late Diogo Jota during their Premier League opener against Bournemouth, with his family expected to be in attendance.
Naija News reports that Diogo Jota, 28, died in a car crash in northern Spain in July 2025 alongside his younger brother Andre Silva, 25. The Reds are determined to make their first league game of the season a celebration of his life and legacy.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed in his programme notes that Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, their children, and other family members are likely to be present for the tribute.
“We know that this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and Andre,” Slot wrote.
“I believe that Diogo’s wife, his children and his family will be in attendance and it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support… We are there for them always.”
Before kick-off, a minute’s silence will be observed at Anfield and across all Premier League grounds. Liverpool players will wear black armbands, while big screens will display images and messages dedicated to Jota and his brother. Fans will unveil a special mosaic in the Kop and the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand during the silence.
In a lasting tribute, the Reds will wear a “Forever 20” emblem for the entire season, honouring the shirt number Jota wore when the club won their record-equalling 20th league title. The number 20 shirt has been retired after consultation with his family.
Former club Wolves will also mark Jota’s passing with tributes before their match against Manchester City on Saturday.
