‘Keep Your Family Name After Marriage’ – Nigerian Mum Advices Fellow Women Using Herself As An Example

A Nigerian mom took to X to advise women planning to marry to keep their maiden names if they wish, stressing that doing so would not negatively impact their lives.

According to Rachelle, she has been married for four years but still kept her family name.

The mother of one said not changing her last name to her husband’s didn’t hinder her from relocating, having a child and travelling solo with her child. She wrote:

“To every girl who is considering getting married, you CAN absolutely keep your name after marriage and I think you should. 4 years married now, I have relocated, had a baby, held joint account, travelled solo with my child and not one issue. Don’t let anyone lie to you.”

When asked if she would have kept her last name if she were married to a man from a wealthy and popular family, she responded saying her name is her identity and she would not change it for any reason.

In her words:

“My husband’s surname is alike to a Lagos Royal family but that hasn’t ever waver my decision. It’s my identity, who I am… it’s just a lot for me to give up.

Let everyone bear their father’s name. So no, I wouldn’t change if if I was married to the aforementioned family.”
