‘Can’t continue’ – Isak voices out, confirms ‘broken promises’ at Newcastle

Alexander Isak has confirmed his intentions to leave Newcastle United after publicly declaring that “when promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”

The Swedish forward, who was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25, released a statement on Monday night, thanking his teammates and staff but making clear his dissatisfaction with the club’s handling of his situation.

“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” Isak said. “That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time.”

Isak, who was absent from the awards ceremony, stressed that the breakdown in trust has left no way forward for his relationship with Newcastle.

“To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading,” he added. “That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

The 25-year-old joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s top strikers.

His issues with the Magpies started even before the season’s opener, with Newcastle objecting to sanction his move to Liverpool, despite the Reds tabling a huge offer.

Eddie Howe, club manager wished for the situation surrounding Isak be cleared soon enough, as it is having an effect on his team’s performance.

Isak has since refused to train with the side, nor feature in any of their recent games from pre-season.
