Wonderful! Labour Party candidate serving jail term wins by-election in popular southeastern state

FCT, Abuja – The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Ngene Bright Emeka, serving a jail term, has been declared the winner of the rerun election in Enugu South Urban Constituency of Enugu State.

Ngene is currently serving a seven-year jail term after an Enugu South Magistrate Court sentenced him to prison on 28 July 2024 over a communal crisis.

Source: Twitter As reported by Premium Times, the re-run election was ordered after the 2023 election was nullified in eight polling units.

The election, however, had faced repeated disruptions since February 2024, with the 16 August 2025 being the fourth attempt; the court-ordered exercise was to happen.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) spokesperson, Sam Olumekun, said Ngene secured the highest number of votes to defeat his closest rival in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Olumekun made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, via the INEC Facebook page.

“Two re-run elections by order of the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals were held in Enugu and Kano States. “After previous disruptions of the elections in the two states by violence and thuggery, the elections have now been concluded.” He further stated that:

“Declaration and return were made by the returning officers. “For the Enugu South 1 State Constituency of Enugu State, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party (LP) was declared the winner.” LP candidate serving jail term wins assembly rerun election in Enugu.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 12 victories, winning seats in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, Adamawa, Kogi, Niger, and Kano states.

Elections in Zamfara were declared inconclusive, with the INEC expected to announce a new date for completion and explain the situation.
