Tinubu targets billion in trade at TICAD9, positions Nigeria as West Africa’s economic hub

By DAVID IORJA, Abuja –

President Bola Tinubu has announced an ambitious goal of securing $1 billion in trade and investment for Nigeria through its participation in the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan.

Leading a high-level Nigerian delegation, Tinubu emphasized that the visit is strategically focused on promoting green innovation, industrial expansion, and establishing Nigeria as a key economic gateway in West Africa.

In a statement shared on his verified X account, @officialABAT, he clarified that Nigeria’s engagement at TICAD9 is purposeful and results-driven.

“At #TICAD9, themed ‘Co-create innovative solutions with Africa,’ Nigeria comes with clarity of purpose,” Tinubu stated.

“Our participation aims to unlock over $1 billion in trade and investment, advance green innovation, expand opportunities for youth, and position Nigeria as West Africa’s hub.”

Tinubu highlighted TICAD9 as a critical platform for fostering enduring partnerships rooted in innovation and mutual trust.

“This summit is our launchpad for lasting development and global collaboration, anchored on technology, trust, and talent,” he added.

He further underscored Nigeria’s leadership role, declaring, “Nigeria will lead, and Africa will rise.”

TICAD9, co-hosted by Japan and international development partners, brings together African leaders, global investors, and multilateral organizations to promote sustainable economic growth and strengthen Africa’s global partnerships.

Tinubu’s attendance, marking his first official trip to Japan since assuming office in May 2023, signals Nigeria’s commitment to deepening economic ties with Japan and attracting substantial private-sector investment.
