The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has urged the Ghana Police Service to expedite efforts to arrest Ralph Saint Williams and his accomplices following the violent assault on medical staff at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).
The call follows a viral video showing relatives of a patient physically attacking health workers at the hospital’s emergency department, sparking widespread outrage and raising concerns about the safety of frontline staff.
In a statement issued after a National Executive Committee meeting on August 21, 2025, the GRNMA expressed deep concern for the wellbeing of nurses and midwives affected by the incident.
While acknowledging that initial arrests have been made, the Association stressed the need for a thorough investigation and swift justice to restore confidence and protect healthcare workers.
It emphasized that the arrest of the key suspects would serve as both a deterrent and a reassurance to nurses and midwives, many of whom are grappling with psychological trauma following the attack.
GRNMA leadership reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its members.
“We hold dear our nurses and midwives and respect the mandate they have entrusted us with. We assure every nurse and midwife that the leadership of the Association will continue to serve your interests and protect you within the framework of the Constitution of Ghana, the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651), and the GRNMA Constitution,” the statement read.
Despite the disturbing incident, the Association reassured patients at Ridge Hospital and across the country that nursing and midwifery services will continue uninterrupted.
GRNMA affirmed its role as a patient advocate, committed to a resilient healthcare system that delivers safe, high-quality services.
The Association also called on the management of Ridge Hospital to provide psychological support to the nurse injured in the attack, and to strengthen training on coping mechanisms for staff working under pressure.
In addition, the GRNMA appealed to the public to show respect and understanding towards health workers and the challenging conditions under which they operate.
“Our public health facilities are seriously challenged – from staffing shortages to inadequate logistics and outdated equipment. It is vital that the public cooperates with health professionals whenever they visit any health facility in Ghana.”
Meanwhile, the Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association of Ghana (CNMAG) earlier today, condemned recent comments by Dr David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), describing his remarks about the Minister of Health as “highly unacceptable”.
