Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has encouraged Nigerians to acquire combat skills as a vital means of self-protection amid rising security threats.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Musa compared learning combat skills to essential survival abilities like driving and swimming.
When asked if Nigerians should learn combat skills for self-defence, Musa responded, “It’s like learning to drive or swim—a survival instinct. In Europe, swimming is mandatory. Security education should be compulsory to understand what security entails.”
He emphasized that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should incorporate unarmed combat training for graduates to enhance their daily survival against threats.
“The NYSC, now reduced to three weeks, should teach security awareness and self-defence skills like unarmed combat, swimming, and driving. These are critical for human survival in today’s dangerous world, where some individuals kill without reason,” Musa said.
The CDS stressed that security is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings to identify suspicious individuals.
