A new crude oil spill has been reported in Ikata community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.
The spill occurred on a pipeline right of way belonging to Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd, operating the 14-inch Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline.

According to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), the incident was discovered on Friday, August 22, 2025, and is suspected to be caused by sabotage, pending confirmation by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).
It was gathered that this is not the first time the pipeline has experienced a spill. YEAC-Nigeria, reported a similar incident on May 5, 2025, making this the second spill on the same pipeline within three months.
Additionally, less than three weeks ago, an oil spill was reported in Kpean Community, Khana Local Government Area, which NOSDRA confirmed was due to equipment failure.
YEAC-Nigeria Executive Director, Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, has however, urged NOSDRA to conduct a joint investigation visit (JIV) to determine the cause of the spill and hold those responsible accountable under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
The organization emphasizes the need for swift action to mitigate the environmental impact of the spill on the flora and fauna in the affected area.
While Renaissance Africa Energy Company Ltd has not made a detailed public statement on this specific incident, the company’s general response to previous spills indicates that they take immediate action to isolate the affected pipeline segment and discontinue production to minimize environmental damage.
They also inform government regulators and coordinate joint investigation visits.
