West Ham United have bolstered their midfield with the signing of Portuguese Under-21 star Mateus Fernandes from Southampton. At the same time, Arsenal have agreed a deal to send defender Jakub Kiwior to Porto on loan with an obligation to buy.
Mateus Fernandes confirmed the signing of Fernandes on Friday, with the 21-year-old penning a five-year contract in a transfer believed to be worth over £40 million.
Currently at the bottom of the Premier League after two straight defeats, and having crashed out of the League Cup midweek against Wolves, West Ham sees Fernandes as a much-needed addition to steady their struggling campaign.
“I’m very happy to be here, and I’m very excited to play for West Ham,” Fernandes said. “It’s a big step for me. It’s a big club, a massive club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything. I want to try to play football, enjoy football, not just run and try to score, but try to play good football. The most important thing is to try to give everything every day.”
Manager Graham Potter, under growing pressure, expressed optimism about the new arrival. “Mateus is a young player who has made impressive progress in the early part of his career, and we are delighted to have secured his signing,” he said.
“He gained valuable experience in the Premier League last year with Southampton and is someone we really feel can help improve us and fit into what we are trying to build and develop at the club.”
Potter added that Fernandes’ maturity and versatility would give West Ham “a different dimension” as they look to turn around their poor start.
Arsenal’s Kiwior Heads to Porto
Meanwhile, Arsenal have finalised an agreement with FC Porto for Polish international Jakub Kiwior, who will join the Portuguese side on an initial €2m loan with a €17m purchase clause.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the deal also includes performance-related add-ons and a sell-on clause, potentially pushing the total value to as much as €30m.
The 25-year-old has accepted personal terms and is eager to secure more consistent playing time under Porto coach Francesco Farioli. Kiwior is expected in Portugal within 24 hours for a medical and to complete the move.
