Manchester United have sealed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial €21 million plus add-ons, ending speculation over a potential move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
Senne Lammens, 23, is already en route to Manchester and will put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Old Trafford.
United have been desperate to shore up their goalkeeping department after a string of costly errors. Altay Bayindir has struggled to convince in the league, while Andre Onana, last season’s No.1, was at fault in the shock EFL Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby.
“I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper at the moment,” manager Ruben Amorim admitted after his side’s 3-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday.
Club insiders believe Senne Lammens has the talent and temperament to grow into the role long-term, describing him as “an exciting young goalkeeper with a bright future”, according to the BBC.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United have agreed a £55m move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, just 24 hours after the DR Congo international urged the Bees to “keep their word” and let him leave.
The deal, worth an initial £50m plus £5m in add-ons, comes after Liverpool shattered the British transfer record by landing Alexander Isak from Newcastle for £130 million.
