Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia has firmly dismissed speculations about replacing his deputy governor, Dr. Sam Ode, ahead of the 2027 elections, asserting that the position is not vacant.
Speaking at the inauguration of 17 new commissioners on Monday in Makurdi, Alia addressed recent media reports suggesting he was seeking a new running mate, emphasizing his unwavering support for Ode.
“I have a deputy governor who is people-oriented, cerebral, and fully capable of delivering on his responsibilities,” Alia declared.
“For those dreaming of a vacancy in 2027, there is none. I enjoy a strong personal and professional relationship with Dr. Ode, and no one wishing otherwise will succeed.”
He praised Ode’s commitment to governance and his alignment with the needs of Benue’s people, debunking any notions of a change in leadership.
During the event, Alia also charged the newly appointed commissioners to uphold discipline, transparency, and loyalty to both the state and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“You must be accessible to the people, share in their struggles, and educate them about government policies,” he urged.
Acknowledging the state’s security challenges, he stressed the importance of remaining steadfast in serving Benue’s interests, adding, “If you feel you cannot support your people without resources, you are free to resign.”
Alia announced that the commissioners’ portfolios would be revealed on Wednesday during their first Executive Council Meeting.
Representing the new appointees, Commissioner Dennis Iyaghigba vowed their dedication to the state and Constitution, promising to excel in their roles.
The inaugurated commissioners include Tiza Imojime, Dr. Ortese, Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, Ugwu Odoh, Amande Kwaghgba, Aondowase Kunde, Michael Oglegba, Alumo Orpin, Dennis Iyaghigba, Ogwuche Ejeh, Prof. Yangien Ornguga, Peter Egbodo, James Dwem, Joseph Jir, Mrs. Margaret Adamu, Mrs. Theresa Ikwue, and Benjamin Ashaver.
