Nigerian govt to pursue further actions against Simon Ekpa after Finnish court conviction

The Federal Government has vowed to take additional steps against separatist agitator and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by a Finnish court.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, said Nigeria would act once it formally obtains and reviews the court’s judgment.

“We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court,” Fagbemi stated.

The AGF noted that the ruling validated Nigeria’s concerns over Ekpa’s activities, which have fueled violence and insecurity in the South East.

“His conviction for the charges of terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the South East,” he said.

Fagbemi also expressed appreciation to Finland for cooperating with Nigeria in efforts to combat insecurity.

“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigeria in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration,” he added.

He assured that Nigeria would not hesitate to take the next legal and diplomatic steps once the judgment was fully studied.

“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgement of the court,” the statement concluded.
