Jürgen Norbert Klopp was born on June 16, 1967, in Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg. He grew up in the Black Forest town of Glatten. His father, Norbert Klopp, made a living by selling dowels and wall fixings. Klopp has two older sisters. Klopp’s father was an enthusiastic sportsman in his early years. He also gave his youngster rigorous physical training. Klopp used to play football all year, tennis in the summer, and ski in the winter.

As a junior, Klopp played for ‘TuS Ergenzingen’. He later played for ‘1. FC Pforzheim.’ During his teenage years, Klopp played for three Frankfurt-based football clubs: Eintracht Frankfurt II, Victoria Sindlingen, and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt. In 1995, he earned a diploma in sports science from the Goethe University of Frankfurt.’

Career
Klopp reveals that in his early years, he wanted to be a doctor but never felt smart enough. That sentiment was echoed in his headmaster’s statement to Klopp when he received his A-level award. In his words, his headmaster expressed optimism that Klopp will succeed in football because if he does not, the future does not look well for young Klopp. During his adolescence, Klopp played football for several German clubs, including FC Pforzheim, Viktoria Sindlingen, Eintracht Frankfurt II, and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt.

While playing amateur football, Klopp worked at a video rental company. While he did not play professional football for Eintracht Frankfurt, Klopp attended the Goethe University in Frankfurt. During that time, Klopp oversaw the football operations of Frankfurt D-Juniors.

Klopp completed his tertiary education, earning a diploma with a major in Sports Science from Goethe University in Frankfurt. His football career continued when he was signed by Mainz 05 in 1990. Klopp changed his position with the club from striker to defender in 1995. Klopp retired from football in 2001, having scored the most goals for Mainz 05.

Mainz 05 (2001–2008)
After retiring from football, Mainz 05 appointed Klopp as manager in February 2001. Following his appointment as the club’s manager, Klopp won six of his first seven games in charge, finishing the season 14th in the league. During his first full season as manager, Klopp finished fourth in the league in 2001/02. The same thing happened throughout the 2002-2003 season. He finally finished third in the 2003/04 season, propelling the team to the Bundesliga for the first time.

In Mainz 05’s first season in the Bundesliga, Klopp helped them finish 11th. During the 2005/06 Bundesliga season, Klopp finished 11th and guided Mainz to the UEFA Cup, where they were eliminated in the first round. Mainz 05 was demoted at the end of the 2006/2007 season. The next season, after failing to secure promotion, Klopp quit as manager of the club.

Borussia Dortmund (2008–2015)
Klopp signed a two-year contract with Borussia Dortmund after being approached to become manager of the German club in May 2008. During his first season as manager, Klopp won the German Super Cup and finished sixth in the league. In his second season as manager, the club finished fifth in the league. Klopp guided Dortmund to Bundesliga success at the end of the 2010/11 season, despite having the league’s youngest roster.

The following season, Klopp replicated the feat. Klopp guided his club to the DFB-Pokal championship in May 2012. After a disappointing 2012/13 season that saw them knocked from the Champions League semifinals, Klopp signed a contract extension with Dortmund that will keep him at the club until June 2018, for the 2013/14 season. That season, Klopp led the club to victory in the German Super Cup. After winning the 2014-15 German Super Cup, Klopp declared that he’ll stand down as club manager at the end of the season.

Liverpool (2015–date)
Klopp signed a three-year contract with Liverpool in the English Premier League in October 2015. In his debut season as manager, Klopp led the club to the League Cup final, which they lost. He also led Liverpool to their first European final since 2007, the UEFA Europa League, which they ultimately lost. He finished eighth in the league. In June 2016, Klopp and his coaching staff signed a six-year contract extension with Liverpool.

During his second season as manager, the club finished fourth in the league, qualifying for the Champions League. Klopp led Liverpool to the Champions League final for the first time, when they were defeated 3-1 by Real Madrid.

The massive loss prompted Klopp to sign Van Dijk for a world record fee of £75 million for a defender. Klopp has also signed elite players to his side, including goalkeeper Alisson Becker and striker Xherdan Shaqiri. Klopp was crowned Premier League Coach of the Month in 2018/19 after winning all of his December matches.

Despite Liverpool’s excellent run, they were unsuccessful in several domestic cup competitions. However, they compensated for their setback by winning the Champions League by defeating English rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0, marking their first Champions League victory and first trophy with Liverpool.

After losing the FA Community Shield in 2019/20, Klopp won the UEFA Super Cup. In August, he won his fourth Premier League Coach of the Month award. In September 2019, Klopp received the Best FIFA Men’s Coach award.

Jürgen Klopp is married twice. He previously married Sabine Heinrich. The couple has a son, Marc, who also plays professional football. In December 2005, Klopp married Ulla Sandrock, an author and social worker.

Klopp is a Protestant Christian. He has been outspoken about his beliefs, admitting that Jesus plays an essential role in his life. He is an ambassador for the German anti-racism campaign ‘Respekt! Kein Platz für Rassismus,’ which translates to ‘Respect, no room for racism.’
