At least 10 people have died and dozens more injured after police in Kathmandu opened fire on protesters opposing Nepal’s ban on popular social media platforms.

The crackdown erupted Monday as tens of thousands, mostly young demonstrators, took to the streets to challenge the controversial policy blocking Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.

Authorities say the platforms failed to register and submit to government oversight, according to The Associated Press.

Local media reported six deaths at Bir Hospital, two at Civil Hospital, and another two at KMC Hospital. Doctors confirmed the fatalities anonymously, citing restrictions on speaking publicly. Many others remain critically injured in several hospitals across the city.

Protesters, waving Nepal’s red-and-blue flag and chanting slogans against the ban, overwhelmed police barricades near Parliament. Water cannons and tear gas failed to disperse the crowds, forcing officers to retreat behind barbed wire.

Witnesses said police then fired live rounds, causing panic in central Kathmandu. Authorities quickly imposed a curfew around Parliament, government offices, the presidential palace, and other key areas.

The so-called “Gen Z protest” reflects widespread anger among young people, who view the ban as an attack on free expression and an effort to silence dissent.

Nepal’s Ministry of Communication said over 20 social networks were repeatedly warned to register locally, but only a few, including TikTok and Viber, have complied.
