Ajayi: Spreading Rhythms Of Africa, Sharing Continent’s Heartbeat Through Power Of Percussion

Oluwatayo Oluwadamilare Ajayi, popularly known as Tayo Conga, has emerged as one of Africa’s most vibrant cultural ambassadors. From the quiet town of Ikogosi in Ekiti State, Nigeria, to international stages across the globe, he has carried with him the rhythms of Africa, sharing the continent’s heartbeat through the power of percussion.

For Ajayi, the drum is more than an instrument, it is life itself. “The world is full of rhythm,” he explains. “The rising and setting of the sun, the moon and stars, time, and the seasons all flow in rhythm. The drum captures these movements and reflects them back to humanity.” This belief has defined his career, turning the conga drum into his tool for storytelling, cultural preservation, and spiritual connection.

Over the past decade, Ajayi has performed at celebrated festivals and events, including the African Drum Festival, the International Jazz Festival, and the Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa. He has also played before diplomats from the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Spain, presenting percussion not just as music but as a universal language of unity. Beyond performances, his workshops have educated diverse audiences on the richness of African rhythms, leaving lasting impressions wherever he goes.

As the lead percussionist of Tumbadora African Entertainment, Ajayi has spearheaded cultural initiatives such as the African Heritage Tour Series, which highlights Nigeria’s historical landmarks, including the Ikogosi Warm Spring and the Badagry Slave Trade Zone. His vision is to make African history come alive through sound, storytelling, and immersive cultural experiences.

In 2025, his global recognition was solidified when he and the Tumbadora African Crew received an official invitation to perform at the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) during the Intra-African Trade Fair in Algiers, Algeria, a testament to his growing influence as a cultural voice on the continent.

Within Nigeria, Ajayi continues to create spaces that celebrate heritage and creativity. He is the convener of the Spirit of Drums concert and the Gathering of Arts and Sound showcase, both platforms dedicated to African percussion. His Tayo Conga Drum Workshop and quarterly cultural events at the Nike Art Gallery in Lagos further bring together art, music, and culture lovers.

Today, Ajayi serves as chief percussionist at Elevation Church in Lagos, where his rhythms enrich worship and inspire thousands. To aspiring percussionists, his message is clear: trust in God, remain rooted in your culture, practice with consistency, and let your talent serve as a bridge of inspiration and preservation.
