Edo PDP members defy rainfall to elect ward leaders

In a remarkable display of dedication, members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State turned out in large numbers on Saturday, September 13, 2025, to elect new ward executives and delegates across all 192 wards, undeterred by heavy rainfall.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed peaceful and enthusiastic participation at Oredo Wards I, II, and III in Benin City, where party members cast their votes with high spirits.

The state caretaker chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who oversaw the process alongside the ward congress electoral committee from Abuja, lauded the members’ commitment.

“The congresses proceeded smoothly, with vibrant participation as PDP members elected 17-member ward executives,” Aziegbemi told NAN.

He added, “We are thrilled by the enthusiasm shown by our members, and their turnout despite the rain speaks volumes about the party’s growing strength.”

Aziegbemi admitted initial concerns about the turnout but was heartened by the response.

“I was apprehensive about what we might encounter, but seeing our members come out as early as 7:30 a.m. under the rain was inspiring. The PDP is on the rise, and we are poised to challenge the APC strongly,” he said.

He further expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, citing “the glaring failures of the APC-led government at both state and federal levels” as a catalyst for PDP’s resurgence in Edo by 2027.

Chairman of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee, Mr. Tariga Tulagha, also commended the orderly conduct and unity displayed.

“The elections for ward officers and delegates were conducted peacefully, with full compliance to regulations. Despite the downpour, members showed up in droves, which is truly commendable,” Tulagha remarked.

He dismissed rumors of internal divisions, stating, “The voting process reflected complete unity. Motions for elected candidates received unanimous support, with no opposition, proving there are no factions within the party.” (NAN)
