Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding resolution of critical labor issues or face a nationwide strike.
The warning was outlined in a letter addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peter Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, and released to the media in Abuja on Monday.
The unions highlighted several grievances, including the uneven disbursement of ₦50 billion in earned allowances, unpaid withheld salaries, outstanding arrears for the 25/35 per cent salary increment, and the stalled renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement.
“Our members in universities have been shortchanged, and staff in inter-university centers were entirely excluded from the ₦50 billion allowance disbursement,” the letter stated, underscoring the perceived inequity.
The unions expressed frustration over the government’s failure to fulfill repeated promises.
“Despite multiple assurances, no concrete steps have been taken to address the payment of withheld salaries or the 25/35 per cent increment arrears,” Adeyemi and Ibrahim noted.
They also criticized the government for sidelining non-teaching unions in the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, calling the delay “unfair and unacceptable.”
The letter, effective from September 15, 2025, warned of industrial action if demands are not met.
“We are left with no choice but to issue this seven-day notice. Failure to act will lead to strikes and other forms of industrial action,” the unions declared, signaling their readiness to disrupt university operations to press for their rights.
