United Bank for Africa (UBA) has debunked social media misinformation regarding a fire at its branch in Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, assuring the public that no lives were lost.
In an official statement issued Tuesday night, UBA clarified the location of the incident, stating, “The fire occurred at a building on Broad Street housing one of our branches, not UBA House, Marina, as falsely reported online.”
The bank emphasized its swift response, adding, “We prioritized the safety of everyone in the branch and urge the public to verify information through our official channels.”
A senior emergency official, speaking anonymously to newsmen , downplayed the severity of the incident, saying, “It was mostly smoke, not flames, and UBA staff had already contained it before responders arrived.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service provided further details, reporting the rescue of nine individuals from the six-storey Afriland Tower.
Deputy Controller-General Ogabi Olajide stated, “Five of the nine rescued victims were successfully resuscitated, and efforts continue to assist the remaining four.”
He noted that the fire, reported at 1:38 p.m., originated in the basement inverter room, causing smoke to spread across multiple floors.
Fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations promptly intervened to manage the situation.
UBA reaffirmed its commitment to accurate communication, directing the public to its official channels for verified updates.
