The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has threatened to close 107 clubs, lounges, bars and restaurants in various parts of the country following a series of noise complaints.
NEMA has given the businesses seven days to furnish the Authority with environmental compliance documents or face closure. In a notice on Monday, the Authority directed the 107 establishments to submit at least five documents, including reasons why legal action or closure should not be taken against them.
“NEMA has been receiving public noise pollution complaints from the public regarding clubs/lounges, bars and restaurants across the country,” the notice read in part.
“Several facilities have been served with the Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply.”

Some of the other documents they are supposed to submit are the certificate of incorporation and list of directors /owners (CR-12), an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence for the facility, and the current Environmental Audit (EA).
The establishments should also detail noise pollution control measures in place.
The listed 107 clubs are spread across the country, although most of them are located in Nairobi County, including some that have been previously closed, like Habanos and Quiver.
Three of the listed establishments, for example, are well-known in Kilimani; two are from Ruiru; two are from Uthiru; two are from Ruaka; and two are at Gateway Mall.
There are also listings for a well-known lounge on Mirema Drive, another chain bar on Kiambu Road, and another on Riverside Drive.
Outside of Nairobi, a pub in Oyugis Town, a club in Kabarnet Town, and another on Mawego Road in Homa Bay have all received approval.
A well-known crocodile farm in Mombasa and a hostel for backpackers in Nyali have been mentioned. At least one establishment has been cited in the towns of Meru, Kakamega, Webuye, and Nanyuki as well.
The full list of the 107 establishments can be found at NEMA’s official website and social media pages.
