The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the official commencement of electioneering campaigns by political parties ahead of the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election.

According to the Commission, the campaign period begins today, Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and will run until midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026, just two days before the election scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026.

INEC’s announcement is in accordance with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election, which allows political parties to start canvassing for votes within the stipulated period.

The Commission, however, cautioned political parties, candidates, and their supporters to strictly adhere to the provisions of the law throughout the campaign period.

“As enshrined in Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act 2022, it is unlawful to use abusive language, carry out physical attacks on opponents during rallies, processions and meetings, or destroy campaign materials belonging to other parties,” said Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.

Olumekun further stressed the need for equal access to public facilities, including media platforms, outdoor advertising spaces, venues for rallies, and other campaign-related activities.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act 2022 prohibits the use of incumbency to the advantage or disadvantage of any party or candidate,” he added.

The 2026 FCT Area Council election will determine the leadership of the six area councils in the territory. INEC urged all stakeholders to conduct their campaigns with decorum and in accordance with the law to ensure a peaceful, credible, and inclusive electoral process.
