Everton, Leeds United settle Premier League PSR breach

Everton and Leeds United have reached an amicable settlement over a dispute relating to Everton’s breach of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) for the 2021/22 season, the PA news agency understands.

The resolution, first reported by The Athletic, is believed to have been agreed during the course of last season, though neither club has issued an official statement.

Everton were originally docked ten points in November 2023 after being found to have exceeded the £105 million allowable losses under PSR by £19.5 million ($26.3m). The sanction was later reduced to six points on appeal in February 2024.

The breach had wider implications, as the Premier League commission allowed five clubs, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Leicester City and Burnley, 28 days from November 17, 2023, to confirm whether they would pursue compensation claims.

With Leeds now understood to have settled, Burnley remain the only club with an outstanding claim. No similar agreements have been reported with Forest, Southampton, or Leicester.

The financial stakes of the dispute were underscored by the fact that Everton finished 16th in the 2021/22 season, just one place and one point ahead of Leeds. According to the Premier League’s annual report, Everton earned £1.9 million ($2.6 million) more than Leeds in merit payments that season.
