Unruly Passengers: NAFSA Tasks Keyamo On Stringent Measures, Commends NCAA, FAAN

September 25, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to introduce stricter measures to curb the growing menace of unruly behaviour at airports across the country.

The professional association, which also operates as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), expressed confidence that with Keyamo’s “pragmatic leadership style,” order, safety, and security can be restored to Nigeria’s airports.

NAFSA, however, commended the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for their recent decisive public statements announcing punitive actions against disruptive passengers.

In a letter dated September 22, 2025, and addressed to the Minister with the title: “From NAFSA Standpoint: The Scourge of The Recent Unruly Behaviours in The Airports and The Way Forward,” the body, through its National President, Comrade Ugbeikwu Sunday Ugbeikwu, noted that recent high-profile incidents involving Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Fuji musician KWAM 1, Miss Comfort Emmanson, and others, highlight the seriousness of the issue.

NAFSA insisted that all culpable passengers must be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Unfortunately, the recent ugly incidents have shown that culpable passengers have been emboldened, with some even resorting to physical violence against airport staff members,” Ugbeikwu stated.

The association further observed that in the past, some disorderly passengers were treated with leniency, a trend which suggested that certain agencies downplayed the severity of such misconduct.

Identifying the underlying factors behind the surge in unruly behaviours, NAFSA listed: weak enforcement of punitive measures, inadequate deterrence, disregard for airport authorities, reactions to economic pressures, and innate social character deficiencies.
