Ex-French President Sarkosy jailed five years over Gaddafi 2007 campaign funds

A court in Paris on Thursday sentenced the former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy.

Sarkosy, who left office in May 2012, was convicted on the accusations that the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, helped fund his 2007 presidential campaign with millions of euros in exchange for diplomatic favours.

The 70-year-old was, however, cleared of three other charges, including passive corruption, illegal campaign financing, and concealing the embezzlement of public funds.

The court also fined the ex-President €100,000, and he will remain in detention despite his intention to appeal the judgement.

With the ruling, Sarkosy, now a member of the Republican Party, becomes the first former French President since World War ll to be sentenced to jail.

He had since rejected his conviction as an injustice.
