Glen Powell is lifting the lid on an uncomfortable Hollywood encounter with a celebrity who had recently been ‘canceled’ — and fans are already frantically speculating about who it could be.
On Wednesday’s episode of Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast, the Anyone But You actor revealed he was caught off guard when the unnamed star, once one of his favorites, approached him at a party.
‘I showed up to the party and there was somebody that had been on the ropes in terms of getting canceled,’ Powell, 36, shared. ‘It was one of those Hollywood parties where there’s like cameras and press and all that stuff.’
At first, he recalled initially feeling excited to meet the A-lister.
‘This person had made some of my favorite movies and I was like, “Oh, this is great.” He came up and he said, “Nice to meet you.” I was like, “Oh, dude. Such a big fan.”‘
But the mood shifted when a photographer asked them to pose together.
‘This person was recently canceled and it was not good. I was a fan of their work but not a fan of their choices,’ Powell explained. ‘So, I was kind of just being nice. But then, when they wanted to take a picture with you, I realized very quickly — I was like, “Ooh, I don’t know if this is a good idea.”‘
According to Powell, the actor ‘clearly clocked’ his hesitation.
‘I realized, this guy, his face is toxic,’ he said. ‘Going out into the world, people are having a visceral reaction to this person in terms of the bad choice they’ve made.’
Powell then drew a comparison to Russ Holliday, the football star he plays in Chad Powers, who gets canceled and disguises himself to join another team.
‘Russ Holliday is just a guy that made a mistake. He’s not a bad guy. Some of these other people that get canceled, they should lie where they’re shot,’ he claimed.
While Powell kept the celebrity’s name under wraps, fans have already launched a guessing game online.
Among the names being tossed around: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Chris Pratt, Ezra Miller, Will Smith and Russell Brand.
The Top Gun: Maverick star has yet to respond to the speculation.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Powell’s representatives, but have not heard back, at this time.
His appearance on the podcast comes just one day after Powell appeared as Jimmy Kimmel’s first guest following his nearly week-long suspension over comments he made about the reaction to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
During their chat, Powell revealed a past connection he had with the Hollywood-based late night show prior to his career breakout.
The Austin, Texas native explained how he moved to Los Angeles in 2008 with few resources as he pursued a career as an actor.
Powell said he caught a break when Kimmel and his producer Diane Kelson let him in his snack-packed green room when he couldn’t afford groceries.
‘So when you can’t afford snacks or alcohol, I could always come to the Jimmy Kimmel show and have my feast,’ said the actor, who has since appeared in action blockbusters such as The Running Man, Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters.
‘Would it be possible when you retell this story that you would say, in a way, I saved your life?’ Kimmel joked.
Powell, who’s also been seen in films such as Hidden Figures, Everybody Wants Some!! and The Dark Knight Rises, was on the ABC series to promote his new series Chad Powers, which is set to debut September 30.
On the show – which will be streamed by Hulu, a subsidiary of ABC parent company Disney – Powell plays a football player named Russ Holliday looking to jumpstart his career.
Following a bad mistake that ended his college career, Holliday is ‘trying to resurrect his dreams by disguising himself as Chad Powers,’ according to a synopsis from producers.
The titular character is described as ‘a talented oddball who walks onto the struggling South Georgia Catfish’ in trying to reclaim his past glory on the gridiron.
