Chief Executive Officer of Mother of Models International, Ambassador Jolly Nnenna Abani, has decried the persistent marginalisation of women-focused initiatives in Nigeria’s media industry.

She warned that the media’s silence on such programmes is suppressing important voices in society.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Abani said women above the age of 40, particularly those who are unmarried, divorced, widowed, or survivors of abuse, continue to be sidelined in entertainment, politics, and public life, despite their potential to shape stronger families and communities.

“Strong women build strong nations. When a woman is sound, she raises a sound family,” she said.

The advocate argued that societal stereotypes often write off women once they cross the age of 40, limiting their visibility and opportunities.

One of the ways to challenge this bias, she explained, is through the 40andFabulousNaija reality TV show, an initiative she founded to empower women, provide training, and create a platform for their voices.

“40andFabulousNaija is not just a show; it is a movement. It is therapy, empowerment, and a second chance for women who need healing to become whole again,” Abani noted.

She lamented that despite significant investment in the project, securing airtime on major broadcast platforms has remained an uphill task. Abani linked this to systemic gatekeeping, where programmes that do not conform to popular entertainment trends are often sidelined.

“I call on you to help me seek justice through my craft, because this is exactly what we need at this moment: something different, something life-changing for women.

“We are not asking for free airtime. What we are asking for is a fair commercial arrangement, a purchase of airtime so our content can reach the audience it deserves. We seek partnership, not charity,” she said.

According to her, some colleagues have withheld support out of fear of being blacklisted, while political allies who initially backed the project withdrew when challenges arose.

“These disappointments have been painful, but they have not deterred us. Instead, they have strengthened our resolve,” Abani stated.

She also criticised the dominance of content that promotes harmful narratives, while projects that encourage family values and social healing are overlooked.

Abani disclosed that auditions for the next season of 40andFabulousNaija are ongoing. While women will serve as full-time housemates, men will participate periodically to share their experiences and showcase their work.
