Sultan urges youths to embrace vocational skills for self-reliance

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Nigerian youths to acquire vocational and entrepreneurial skills as a pathway to self-reliance and a solution to the rising unemployment.

The Sultan, represented by the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar Jabbi, gave the charge at a capacity-building workshop organized by the Sokoto Professionals Network (SPN), a non-partisan, non-profit organization supporting students and graduates in the state.

The training, themed “Public Speaking, Report Writing, and Presentation Skills”, sought to equip 130 participants with practical communication tools vital for career and business opportunities.

Abubakar stressed that empowering youths with relevant skills would help reduce social unrest and crime linked to joblessness.

He pledged the Sultanate Council’s continued support for organizations that complement government efforts in tackling youth unemployment.

The Sultan commended SPN’s board chairman for championing youth empowerment, while also applauding the Sokoto State government for its continued support of the network’s initiatives.

“We will continue to work with traditional leaders across the state to mobilize communities and change mindsets toward self-reliance,” Sultan assured.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu, represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Muhammad Maishanu, declared the workshop open.

He highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship in the digital age, noting that the training would provide students and graduates with self-employment opportunities.

“Knowledge is the best gift you can give a human being,” the governor said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting youth-focused initiatives.

Chairman of the SPN Board of Trustees, Engr. Zayyanu Tambari Yabo, said the organization has trained more than 1,000 youths in areas such as solar installation, entrepreneurship, and career guidance within five years of its establishment.

He explained that the workshop aimed to address gaps in communication, proposal writing, and presentation skills—areas often neglected in schools but critical for professional advancement.

Dr. Mansur Isha Buhari, the State Coordinator of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), reminded the participants that effective communication is a powerful tool for both personal and professional growth.
