Street football takes centre stage in Awka with ₦10m prize money

The maiden edition of the Tiger Street Football tournament, a 5-a-side competition designed to ignite the fearless, uncaged energy of young Nigerians and celebrate their love for football, will be staged this October.

The tournament, which will kick off in Awka, creates an opportunity for non-professional players who play football on the streets for the love of the sport.

Non-professional players – students and hustlers, dreamers and hidden talents – will form teams of eight and battle through a knockout format beginning with the round of 16.

Each city will host its own full competition, culminating in a one-day of semi-finals and finals. The winning teams will be rewarded with ₦5 million for the overall winner; ₦3 million for second place, and ₦1 million each for third and fourth position.

“Tiger Street Football is not just about football. It is about the people. It is about recognising talent, celebrating community, and giving Nigerians a platform to shine where football feels most alive — in the streets,” Maria Shadeko, portfolio manager, premium brands, Tiger Beer, stated.

According to Shadeko, Tiger aims to celebrate communities, from the teams bringing their collective passion to the game, to fans bringing the energy to support their local teams. She stated that the brand knows that football is not just about goals and glory, but about championing the power of the collectives.

“Tiger is a brand built on courage, and we see that same spirit every time someone steps onto the pitch to play,” Shadeko stated, disclosing that the brand is backing the courage and creative fire that define Nigerian youth by investing in street football.

She also disclosed that there will be halftime parties and live cultural experiences to channel the rhythm and resilience of the streets around the games. “The result is part competition, part festival; a reminder that football is as much about community as it is about sport.”
