It was a day of celebration in Isolo, Lagos, as the member representing Isolo 2 Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, hosted a thanksgiving ceremony to mark his journey so far in the National Assembly.
The well-attended event drew colleagues from the House of Representatives, including members of the Nigeria–U.S. Parliamentary Friendship Group, which Onuakalusi chairs. Lawmakers praised him for his dedication to his people and his vocal contributions on the floor of the House.
One of his colleagues, who is also a member of the group, said he came to honor Onuakalusi not only as a chairman but also as a trusted colleague. “He is one vocal member in the House of Reps, one transparent person, one who is up and doing and means well for his constituency. It is important that people like us come to support him,” he said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Onuakalusi described himself as a servant of the people who is committed to fulfilling the promises he made during his campaign. He noted that since his inauguration two years ago, he has strived to make Isolo 2 more visible in the National Assembly and in the international space.
“We have empowered over 600 people, provided transformers, installed solar streetlights in 33 streets, and dug more than 10 boreholes. We facilitated the completion of the NNPC road and added 10 more routes to ease movement. All these were made possible by the mercy of God, so this thanksgiving is about returning all glory to Him,” he said.
The lawmaker explained that the celebration was also an opportunity to account to his constituents and renew his commitment to service. “It is a thing of joy to represent your people and come back to them. Our projection was 3,000 people, but if 5,000 turn up, we will rejoice with them,” he added.
On the current economic situation in Nigeria, Onuakalusi, who is a member of the Labour Party, stressed the role of the legislature in supporting the executive arm of government. He said the National Assembly had passed key bills and budgets designed to improve the economy and had given the executive all the tools needed to deliver on governance.
“The ball is now in the court of the executive to bring support to the people. Many people do not understand that lawmakers do not execute projects; we only facilitate them. The majority in the House will always have their way, but as opposition members, we continue to make our voices heard. Under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, we are maintaining a harmonious relationship with the executive while still playing our role,” Onuakalusi said.
The thanksgiving was marked by prayers, music, and a large gathering of constituents, party members, and political associates, all of whom joined the lawmaker in celebrating what he described as “a journey of service sustained by God’s grace.”
