Lagos To Host  Africa’s First E1 Grand Prix

The Lagos State governor,  Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated on his X account @ Babajide Sanwo-Olu  (formerly known as Twitter), that from the 29th of September 2025 to the 5th  of October will host the world’s all-electric powerboat championship, the E1 series.

The governor gave the reasons why the E1 sport will be held in Lagos, being the first state to hold the sport in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole.

The governor said that “The E1 Lagos Grand Prix is a demonstration of innovation and progress, showing how sports can inspire sustainable solutions for the future.

“It is also a celebration of the creativity and resilience that define our people”, he said.

E1 Series is the world’s first all-electric international offshore powerboat racing series, authorised by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM).

The series features the RaceBird, an all-electric hydrofoil powerboat designed by SeaBird Technologies and manufactured by Victory Marine.

This championship has taken place in locations like Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Venice in Italy, Puerto Banús, Monaco, and Lagos, with more cities expected to host future events.

Organisers anticipate the event will generate significant economic impact, with Lagos is targeting $100 million in revenue to be earned through tourism and related sectors.

The championship also supports the Omi Eko project, introducing 72 electric boats to enhance water transportation and reduce road congestion, further cementing Lagos’ role as a hub for sustainable innovation.

“This is a demonstration of progress and a celebration of our people,” said Sanwo-Olu, urging residents and visitors to join in this historic moment.

Tickets for the E1 Lagos Grand Prix are available now, inviting all to witness Africa’s aquatic capital race into the future.
