Climate change mitigation should start locally – Stakeholders

Stakeholders have called for grassroots-focused action to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change, stressing that solutions cannot be left to international summits alone.

Speaking at the African Climate Caravan 2025 held in Bauchi on Tuesday, Programme Manager for Climate Justice at Oxfam Nigeria, Mr. Kenneth Akpan, said communities are bearing the brunt of climate disasters, including floods and disease outbreaks that have claimed thousands of lives.

Akpan explained that the Climate Caravan, organised in partnership with the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation and PARE, seeks to highlight local realities of climate change. “In Nigeria, Bauchi was selected for this caravan.

The state has had its own share of the impacts, and by speaking up, we hope to attract the right funding and support,” he said.

He urged residents to prioritise cleanliness to curb recurring cholera outbreaks that have affected many households in the state.

Also speaking, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Hon. Ahmed Kawule, noted that climate change is no longer a distant or abstract issue.

“It is not just a global summit agenda or a scientific debate—it is a daily reality being felt here in Bauchi,” he said.

Kawule lamented the unpredictability of rainfall, which he said has made it difficult for farmers to know when to plant or harvest.

“This erratic weather has destroyed farmlands through floods in some parts and caused drought in others, threatening food security across the state,” he added.

As part of the event, stakeholders carried out a road sensitisation campaign on climate change before proceeding to the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Adamu Sulaiman Rilwanu.

The procession showcased the cultural heritage of the state with horse riding, talking drums, and traditional attire.
