President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, have both condemned the tragic killing of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a news anchor with Arise Television News, who was murdered during a robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the death of the 29-year-old journalist, describing her as “a promising professional whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner.”
He extended heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s family, the management of Arise News, and the entire Nigerian media community, assuring them of swift justice.
“Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay,” Tinubu said.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that efforts to combat crime across the country would be intensified.
Echoing the President’s sentiments, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike vowed that Maduagwu’s killers would be apprehended.
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, Wike described the journalist’s death as both “tragic and painful.”
“I feel pained that such a wonderful soul could be cut down in her prime. It is sad,” Wike said.
He commiserated with the Arise News family, particularly its Chairman, Nduka Obaigbena, and called for prayers and support for the deceased’s loved ones.
“Her death is not only a loss to Arise News but to the Nigerian media and the entire nation,” he added.
According to the FCT Mandate Secretary on Health, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Maduagwu was brought to the Maitama General Hospital dead at about 4:30 a.m. on Monday. Wike noted that preliminary medical findings would be shared with the police to aid their ongoing investigation.
He assured that “all efforts will be made to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death and bring those responsible to justice.”
Both leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the killers of Somtochukwu Maduagwu do not escape justice, as Nigerians mourn the loss of a vibrant voice in journalism.
