The paramount ruler of the Igbo people, HRH Chidi Nwogwugwu, has called on the senate to enact legislation, supporting cultural events like the New Yam Festival.
Speaking to journalists at the 2025 New Yam Festival in Angwadodo Community, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Eze Nwogwugwu emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage through legislative backing.
This year’s festival, according to him, underscores the rich traditions and values of the Igbo people, highlighting the need for official recognition and support.
By advocating for laws that promote cultural events, HRH Nwogwugwu aims to ensure the continuation of vital cultural practices and traditions that define the Igbo identity.
In a vibrant celebration of their heritage, members of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Angwadodo Community organized the traditional New Yam Festival last Sunday.
This revered event aimed to rekindle and showcase the rich cultural traditions of the Ndigbo, strengthening community bonds and preserving their unique identity.
According to him, the festival serves as a platform to rekindle and preserve the Igbo Community’s traditions and customs, especially, those that align with natural justice, equity, and good conscience.
He added that many residents, among Ndigbo in the area and other areas have lost touch with essential customs, such as breaking cola nuts, and that festivals like the New Yam Festival help to revive these practices.
By enacting laws to support cultural events, the government can play a vital role in preserving the nation’s cultural identity.
Earlier in his address, HRH Eze Eric Onah, the Igbo traditional ruler in Gwagwalada Area Council, commended the paramount ruler of Angwadodo for his tireless efforts in organizing the festival, which he believed would help revive the rich cultural traditions of the Igbo people.
He encouraged other Igbo traditional rulers within and outside his domain to follow suit, emphasizing that this would have a profound impact on preserving their heritage.
