Emergency teams quickly arrived at the scene to assess the severity of the situation and rescue those who were injured.

Videos obtained by TUKO.co.ke showed the aftermath, with traders stranded and others trying to salvage what remained of their goods.

Twisted iron sheets, mangled beams, crushed stalls, and goods worth millions, including food items and assorted merchandise, were all that remained after the incident.

How much did Kibuye market cost to construct? The incident has raised concerns about the sustainability of modern markets being built across the country.

The marketplace, constructed in phases at a cost of about 500 million, was officially opened in a colourful event in 2020. Four years later, part of it has now collapsed.

Speaking to TV47, one of the traders recounted how the event unfolded on that fateful day.

“It came down like thunder. People were screaming as stalls collapsed. We had to run for our lives. This market was put in place to protect us, traders, but instead it has caused us so many losses,” one sad trader recounted. The market, which brought hope to the people of Kisumu, was meant to drive their economic transformation.

Traders have questioned how a KSh 500 million ultramodern marketplace could collapse and lead to such significant losses.

“This is a scandal hiding in plain sight. How can a KSh 500 million market collapse in four years after its launch? Some body must be accountable,” another angry trader said. Source: TUKO.co.ke
