Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti
Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti has announced that his administration has made progress in resolving electricity challenges in Abia State.
The governor stated this at the Graduation Ceremony of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance in Abuja, on Saturday.
“We have solved this problem in Aba, and half of Abia State is on it. We have eight other local governments we’re trying to solve, including Umuahia and other places,” Governor Otti said.
The achievement, covering nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the Aba ring-fence, including Aba North, Aba South, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Obingwa, Osisioma, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West, was as a result of the activation of the Geometric Power Project.
THE WHISTLER reported that Otti’s administration facilitated the full operationalisation of the long-delayed Geometric Integrated Power Project, Nigeria’s first independent integrated power facility with a 141-megawatt capacity.
The project, originally initiated 20 years earlier, was commissioned in February 2024.
Otti had stated in an interview with Channels Television in 2024 that he supported the project’s funding during his banking career.
“I headed to Diamond Bank, which actually was the bank that was initially funding the project. On getting to Diamond Bank, we restructured the facility and saw it to completion by October 2014, the time I left Diamond Bank,” the former General Manager of the defunct Diamond Bank added.
THE WHISTLER also reported that Otti signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into law in March 2025, establishing the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA) and acquiring a 60 per cent stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) from Interstate Electrics Limited to create a Umuahia ring-fence.
This enables surplus power from Geometricc to be wheeled to Umuahia and other areas, targeting a 22-hour supply statewide and potential exports to neighbouring regions, according to the governor.
